Background

The timing of the construction of Arrowsmith Lodge could not have been better, or maybe worse. A rash of falls on stairs at area rest homes and the disappearance of a resident at one of these homes highlighted the need for a building with a single floor, enhanced care and private rooms where residents could find sanctuary.

Everett Blish, who began counselling local seniors in 1968 as part of his duties with the newly created, Senior Citizen Counselling Service, recognized the need for a change in how the elderly were housed. Blish sought input from local organizations and the focus was set on establishing the Senior Citizen Personal Care Unit.

With Blish as a driving force, local residents came together to form the Arrowsmith Rest Home Society. It was a dedicated and colourful group of individuals who worked tirelessly to raise the society’s profile and, of course, money through card parties, bingos, tea parties, bake sales and raffles.

Blish, who served as the first administrator of Arrowsmith Rest Home Society, is widely recognized as the society’s founder.

While needs have changed since the 1970s, we remain committed to our founder’s vision of caring for the physical, social, emotional, mental and spiritual well being of the elders who live in our communities.

We provide educational sessions for the board and staff, quality assurance, adult day programs and respite care.
